Kebbi Govt to revive Argungu Fishing Festival

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State at weekend said the state government is putting every machineries in place to revive the famous Argungu International Fishing and Ctural Festival.

He said his administration has already deployed professionals in water engineering to design a concept that would allow uninterrupted flow of water to Matan Fada River, venue of the fishing festival.

The embankment constructed at Gurbin Manu, Garin Dabai in Augie Local Government Area of the state had obstructed normal flow of water into the river.

This had let to the shrinking of Matan Fada River and the water ways passing through communities in seven local government areas with negative impact on agriculture, fishing and domestic chores including human and animal consumption.
The reviving effort was sequel to complaint by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama'ila Muhammad Mera on the water level which prompted a swift action from the governor.

The Governor said he had despatched four Commissioners under the leadership of the Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Musa Muhammad Tungulawa in company of the Magajin Garin Kabi, Engineer Aminu Musa who represented the Emir of Argungu to accompany the water engineers to the spot of the embankment for inspection and design appropriate concept for a permanent solution to the problem.
He said this will help to restore free flow of water to the tributary supplying Matan Fada River, Mala in Argungu and by extension to Dukku in Birnin Kebbi, Bunza and emptying in the River Niger.
