Days To Inauguration: Kebbi Deputy Governor Elect In Certificate Forgery Mess

From Umar Abdullahi

Few days to his inauguration, the Deputy Governor Elect of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida is in a certificate forgery scandal.

A group under the auspicies of Concerned Citizens of kebbi State in a press release made available to journalists said the Deputy Governor Elect who had been given certificate of return by INEC and was to be sworn-in on May 29 actually forged his school certificates.

The group said the certificate issue which is already generating controversies in the state became public when the deputy governor elect attempted to bribe a school principal to get a certified certificate from the school he claimed to attend in Sokoto.

It also alleged that he wrote a letter to the Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Basic Education and Secondary Education in Sokoto, Mr Lawal Saddiq Sanusi requesting for the certified true copy of his testimonial.

"In the letter, he claimed to be a student of Sultan Abubakar College between 1974 and 1979 with the admission number 958", it said.

It was also said that he had requested for  certified copy of the testimonial and a letter of confirmation to be attached to it bearing Umaru Abubakar but the school Principal refused because he had no official record with the school.

The group said the principal has been under pressure by the Permanent Secretary to produce attestation for the Deputy Governor elect but he stood his ground insisting that the name Umaru Abubakar is not on the list of students who graduated and were issued testimonials in 1979.

It said "The Deputy Governor was dismissed from Sultan Abubakar College Sokoto then a Teachers Training College during a mock examination alongside 15 others. There is no examination record or school record that showed Umaru Abubakar sat for Teachers Grade ll examination in 1982. Neither is there any to show he was among students who were issued testimonials in 1982 as indicated in the testimonial he attached to INEC form".
