Alhaji Tajudeen Rahman, a United States-based banker and devoted fan of Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, has described the late music icon’s style as superior to Juju music in terms of depth and musical delivery.
Speaking in an interview with ALÓRE TV, Rahman said Fuji music, particularly as performed by the legendary Barrister, stands out because of its unique structure and storytelling style. According to him, Juju music typically features choruses that come in quickly, giving listeners regular breaks within the song.
However, he explained that Barrister, widely regarded as the pioneer of Fuji music, had the rare ability to sing continuously for as long as 30 minutes before the chorus would join in or repeat his line.
Rahman noted that the style demonstrates the lyrical strength, stamina, and creativity that defined Barrister’s music career. “You can see the difference clearly. In Juju music, the chorus comes in at intervals, but Barrister could go on singing for a very long time before the chorus responds,” he said.
Despite his preference for Fuji, Rahman added that musicians who perform Juju music also deserve recognition for their contributions to Nigerian music. He maintained, however, that Barrister’s Fuji music remains unmatched when it comes to delivering powerful and meaningful songs.
