The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has praised security agencies for preventing a potential religious clash in Ikorodu, Lagos, following tensions between Muslim residents and Oro worshippers over a controversial curfew.
In a statement issued on Monday, the group’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, commended officers of the Ebute Ipakodo Police Division and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) for swiftly intervening to maintain order.
MURIC said the crisis stemmed from a curfew allegedly declared by Oro worshippers in Ikorodu West, restricting movement from 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, to 12 noon on Friday, March 27, 2026. The group described the action as “illegal, unconstitutional, and provocative,” particularly as it coincided with Friday congregational prayers for Muslims.
Akintola argued that no group has the authority to impose movement restrictions without approval from the state government, noting that such powers rest solely with authorities acting on security advice. He warned that unilateral actions of this nature could trigger a breakdown of law and order.
Citing provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, MURIC maintained that freedom of movement and worship are fundamental rights that must not be infringed upon by any religious or traditional group.
The organisation also criticised what it described as a pattern of “extreme practices” among some Oro adherents in Ikorodu, while acknowledging that traditional worshippers in other parts of Lagos are more moderate.
Despite its concerns, MURIC stressed that it supports the right of traditionalists to practise their religion, urging them to do so without violating the rights of others.
The group further appealed to security agencies to remain vigilant, warning of possible renewed attempts to enforce similar restrictions. It also called on Muslim residents to remain law-abiding and report any provocation to authorities.
MURIC concluded by reiterating its commendation of the police and DSS, noting that their proactive response helped avert what could have escalated into a violent confrontation.
