The demand was contained in a statement issued on Monday, November 10, 2025, by Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC.
According to the statement, MURIC’s position follows a report by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), which alleged that Professor Amupitan was behind the legal memo submitted to the U.S. — a document reportedly cited in a recent threat by former U.S. President Donald Trump to “intervene” in Nigeria over religious persecution claims.
“This revelation is shocking, astounding, and petrifying. It adds another dangerous dimension to the U.S. threat of invasion,” the statement read.
Professor Akintola said MURIC believes that anyone associated with such a controversial document cannot be trusted to preside over Nigeria’s electoral processes.
“A man who authored the hate letter to President Donald Trump about Muslims of Northern Nigeria cannot be expected to be fair in overseeing elections in Nigeria, particularly general and gubernatorial elections,” Akintola stated.
He further warned that Amupitan’s leadership poses a “potent threat” to Muslim candidates across the country, especially in the North-Central region, adding that his continued stay in office undermines public confidence in INEC’s neutrality.
“From the moment this disclosure was made, Amupitan has become persona non grata in Muslim circles in election matters. We hereby declare our total, complete, and categorical loss of confidence in him as INEC boss,” the statement continued.
MURIC therefore urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act swiftly by relieving Professor Amupitan of his duties and appointing another qualified person with “a national spread of acceptance” to head the electoral body.
“We suggest that any other qualified person, preferably of the same faith as Amupitan but from another geopolitical zone, be picked to replace him,” Akintola added.
The controversy comes amid heightened political and religious sensitivities as Nigeria prepares for key off-season elections and the run-up to the 2027 general polls.
