The departments are, Medicine, Surgery, Opthalmology, Ear, Nose and Throat, ENT, Dental and Physiotherapy.
The Chief Medical Director, CMD, and Permanent Secretary, Dr. Zaki Abubakar Zaki, while briefing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday said the relocation of some departments to Kalgo Medical Centre becomes necessary to pave way for the reconstruction of the affected buildings and installation of appropriate modern equipment
The units to remain until completion are Accident & Emergency, A&E, Maternity Unit, Paediatrics, Intensive Care Unit, ICU, Dialysis, Laboratory and X-ray. He said "Governor Nasir Idris, approved the transformation of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, into modern edifice to meet the challenges of modern medical care.
"The hospital was established in 1952, when Birnin Kebbi was less populated, but exigencies of population increase made it obligatory to align the hospital to cope with present realities",
He added that patients coming to the affected departments will receive their medical records for presentation at the new location and buses will be made available for transport from Birnin Kebbi to Kalgo for the affected staff, while ambulances are stationed to convey patients of certain emergency cases.
The hospital would be positioned to undertake all levels of training for medical professionals but the hospital will continue to maintain its position as tertiary health institution and not necessarily university teaching hospital
