UNICEF, Kebbi Govt Celebrates World Toilet Day in Shanga LGA.

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund UNICEF in collaboration with Kebbi State Government has joined the World to celebrate 2024 Toilet Day in Shanga Local Government Area of the State.

In his address, the UNICEF Chief of Field Office Sokoto, Dr Micheal Juma said the event is celebrated in Shanga as part of efforts to commemorate their excellent achievement in attaining Open  Defecation Free Status declared by the national task group on sanitation (NTGS).

Dr Juma who was represented at the occasion by the UNICEF WASH Specialist, Mr Derek Kim described the achievement as the first of it's kind in Kebbi State also called on other LGAs to do the same.
He commended the State Ministry for Rural and Community Development, RUWASSA, Local Authorities and as well USAID for their support to the program.

Earlier, State Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Alhaji Garba Salisu Takware attributed the achievement to the leadership qualities and support of the State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu) and the UNICEF/USAID intervention support.

He said the ministry under his watch will continue to give more support to six additional LGAs to achieve similar objectives. Also Speaking the Shanga Local Government Council Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdullahi Maiunguwa represented by the Vice Chairman Alhaji Adamu Hamza Gele assured the Local Government of their readiness to support and sustain the program.

Highlight of the event was the drama presentations on the importance of good hygiene practice to the people. The event also have in attendance, the Ag General Manager RUWASSA, Eng Adamu Shehu, Directors from RUWASSA, Traditional and Religious Leaders, Security Agencies and as well UNICEF Officials from Sokoto field Office among others.

It also witnessed participation of people from all work of life also featured cutting of ODF Victory Cake and commissioning of Solar Motorized Borehole and Toilet facility in Tungan Giwa Community of the Local Government Area.
