Civil society group, SYPM condemn display of foreign flags during protest

By Samaila Bayo

A coalition of civil society groups in Sokoto under the Youth for Progressive Movement (SYPM) has condemned what it called foreign interference in the country's internal affairs during the last nationwide protest.

The group in a statement signed by its coordinator, Mustapha Buda said it was disturbing to see foreign flags being displayed during the protest and it indicates a serious concern about attempts by foreign entities to destabilize Nigeria like they did to Libya, Sudan and others.

"The display of foreign flags during a domestic protest and arrest of foreign nationals by the security agents confirm our fears.

"This is not only disrespectful but also indicative of a larger, troubling trend of foreign actors seeking to manipulate and destabilize our nation for their selfish agendas.

"We strongly condemn any form of external interference to undermine Nigeria's sovereignty and the democratic rights of its citizens", it said.

The group called on the federal government to take decisive action by identifying and prosecuting those foreign individuals and organizations found to be involved in the destabilizing activities.

It added that the federal government should formally address the issue with the governments of the countries whose nationals were involved in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

The group said government should also put in place security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future by engaging in rigorous monitoring and regulation of foreign entities operating within the country's borders.

It stated that Nigeria is a sovereign nation with the right to manage its own affairs without external pressure or interference. "The recent protest demonstrated the strength and unity of our people, and it is imperative that we protect this democratic spirit from being undermined by foreign influences", the group said.
