The Kebbi State teakwondo training centre has been rated first of its kind in the country. It's team is also said to be fast growing.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Comrade Nura Bala Fingiller during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi said the state's teakwondo training centre had been confirmed first of its kind in Nigeria and it's team as fast growing by the Chairman Nigeria Teakwondo Association, Abdullahi Saidu Baba Zuru.
He said the spectacular record was achieved by the State's teakwondo team based on it's performance from 2015 when it participated in the Korean Ambassador Team Competition and narrowly lost to the Lagos team.
After this, he said the state teakwondo team had participated in other tournaments such as Nigeria open teakwondo championship, inspector general of police teakwondo tournament,Angona national teakwondo opens in Kano , national teakwondo trials and Lagos international classic and made it to the podium by coming first, second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
"In the Angona teakwondo championship in Lagos, Kebbi won 2 gold,3 silver and 5 bronze medals to come fourth out of 27 participating teams.
"At 2nd Alfagha cup, the team was the only Nigerian team that won a gold medal and 4 bronze medals.
"It won 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals at the Nigeria sports festival in Edo State, won several medals at the national sports festival in Asaba", he said.
Comrade Fingiller said the team is now preparing for the Nigeria Opens International Teakwondo Championship that is being organized by the World Teakwondo as a G 1 Tournament in Abuja.
