Kebbi lawmaker, Dr Fana, Buro flags off support group for widows, orphans

A member of Kebbi State House of Assembly,  Dr Suleiman Abubakar Fana, Alhaji Umar Idris Buro and others have flagged off a support group tagged, Association for Widows, Divorcee and Orphans to back Kebbi State Government in it's efforts to carter for the less privilege and vulnerable in the state.


The legislator who is representing Dandi Constituency at the state assembly said the support group was flagged off at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi to commemorate the International Women's Day celebration and in particular to address the plight of widows, divorcee and orphans across the 21 local government areas of the state.


Dr Fana, while speaking to journalists during the flag off ceremony of the association commended the administration of Governor Nasiru Idris's efforts in addressing the plight of widows divorcee and orphans in kebbi state.He said he, Alhaji Umar Idris Buro and others have come out to support and collaborate with the state government to end the suffering of orphans, widows and divorcee in the state.



The lawmaker emphasized the need for data to capture the orphans, widows and divorcee in the state saying it is important because it will make it possible for those that wants to reachout to them for support to do so without difficulties.


Dr Suleiman, who with Alhaji Umar Idris Buro, the grand patron of the association are recepients of the association's award said he, Buro and the executive director of the project, Hajiya Halima Kamba are pioneers of the project initiated in Dandi to support the state government's effort in catering for the vulnerable widows, divorcee and orphans in the 21 local government areas of the state.


He said "As a gender specialist, I have been guiding and sponsoring the project financially from the beginning to this state. 


"We have been carrying on the project with a philanthropist, Alhaji Buro (Limam Kabbawa) who is also a father to the less privilege and supporter of widows and orphans in the state. Our aim is to cover the whole state.", he said.


He added that some selected orphans, widows and divorcee that include the christians and representatives of the christians association of Nigeria (CAN) were given some token of cash during the flag off the project in Birnin Kebbi.


"The aim of the project is to assist the less privilege and vulnerable in the state. They are facing alot of financial and social challenges.


"Our aim is to intervene for them so that they can overcome their bondage and have a sense of belonging. And as human beings, to enjoy their lives", Dr Fana said.


The legislator called on spirited individuals in the state to join hands with government and other support groups to end the plight of the orphans, widows and divorcee in kebbi State.


Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Nafisat Idris who was represented at the event by Hajiya Salamatu Tafida, state chairperson of ANCOPSS, women wing,  in her remarks commended the initiative. She said the less privilege in the society deserves to be taken care of. "I appeal to wealthy individuals in the state to support the orphans and widows for them to live a meaningful life", she said.


While presenting her paper, Dr Nafisat Abubakar Zaki, Executive Director,Zaki GEM Support Foundation stated that there was need to create awareness on the plight of widows, divorcee and orphans in the state. She advocated that it was necessary to make them self reliant and as well useful to themselves. 


She said "the family should be supportive to the orphans, widows and divorcee. They should teach them how to keep their homes". Dr Nafisat called for the collaboration of government and other stakeholders to see to the welfare of the orphans, widows and divorcee as members of the community.



As part of their support to the orphans, widows and divorcee, the first wife of Kebbi State Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Idris donated the sum of N500,000 while the Governor's second wife, Hajiya Nafisat Idris donated N300,000. Alhaji Umar Idris Buro, a patron of the association also made a donation of N1m and Dr Suleiman Abubakar Fana donated N500,000 to support the less privilege.
