Kebbi State Ministry of Justice on Monday said the state government has paid over N1bn to secure169 indigent students certificates witheld by the various institutions they are studying because of the debt being owed to the schools by past administration.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Junaidu Bello Marshall at a weekly press briefing organised by the Ministry of information to showcase the achievement of Governor Idris Nasiru's administration within it's eight months in office said the present administration was able to resolve the plight of the indigent students by paying off the debt for them to continue their studies in the various institutions.
It would be recalled that certificates of 169 Kebbi indigent students were seized because of debt owed to the various institutions they are studying at home and overseas. But Governor Nasir Idris upon assumption of office approved the payment of the over N1bn debt .
The state attorney general during the briefing said 48 law students were also granted scholarship by the state government while more law officers are recruited and their offices equipped with over 40 laptops to enhance their efficient delivery of service to the state.
He said there are 153 cases before the state's ministry for justice, 80 of it are before the appeal court in sokoto while 70 of the cases are at the supreme court.
"Over 300 people standing trial at the correctional centres in the state. I'm personally handling over 20 cases for prosecution.
"Efforts are on to decongest the prisons.We are doing a lot to ensure people are not being kept in the prisons without being tried", he said.
The attorney general also said the state is looking at creating a security outfit to tackle lawlessness and ensure peoples rights are being protected in kebbi State.
