This call was made in the wake of another gruesome murder of a politician-cum-farmer, Dr Aborode in the state recently amongst others. The group said it has become necessary for an intervention having experienced the same, with a threat to their lives sometime back causing some of its members to flee the country.
DE-REPORTORIAL MAGAZINE learnt that the incessant attack on farmers in the area and other communities in the south-west region in Nigeria has made the call for the emancipation of the Yoruba stronger, hence the call for the Yoruba Nation has continued to hold water in the country and outside Nigeria.
Also, we reliably gathered that in the wake of the call, most of his members have left the area for other parts of the country while some have even relocated abroad.
One of the agitators, who chooses to remain anonymous for security reasons said “Despite the experience he had back home before he fled the country, he would always stand by the truth, canvassing for the emancipation of the Yorubas from the Fulani's onslaught against the people of South-west Nigeria.”
He stressed further that during the menace by the Fulani herdsmen-cum-terrorist, lives were lost, women were serially raped, and economic businesses were in shambles especially those in agricultural produce, putting the community that's known as the food basket of the region in economic crisis.
It could be recalled that Aborode, a farmer, who was the House of Representatives candidate of the platform of the Social Democratic Party in 2015, was killed by gunmen on December 11, 2020, while returning home from his farm.
The killing among other issues eventually led to the quit notice given to Seriki Fulani in Igangan, Salihu Abdukadir whose properties were razed by some Ibarapa youths.
Governor Seyi Makinde, had on February 20 expressed dissatisfaction with the way the police were handling the investigation into the case.
The governor said the father of Aborode told him that his son’s death had a political undertone when he visited the bereaved family during his visit to Igangan.
Makinde had said during a radio programme, “Oyo State is not a jungle, we must find a way to get to the root of the matter (Aborode’s killing). I went to Ibarapa and I slept over to know what the situation was. I went to Dr Aborode’s biological father and some of the things we found out were that the death was also caused by failure of intelligence.” The governor said.
