Kebbi immigration celebrate 60th anniversary, rescues 52 Libya bound trafficked victims

Samaila Bayo, Kebbi

The Nigeria Immigration Service, Kebbi State Command on Tuesday celebrated 60th anniversary of its establishment.

The NIS Kebbi State Command Comptroller, Rabi Bashir Nuhu while briefing journalists in her office said the NIS was carved out of the Police Force in 1958 and has since then evolved around many activities on control of movement, safety and development of the country.

She said upon her assumption of office in February last the command had intercepted, rescued and handedover 52 trafficked victims to the National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP).

She added that the command had succeeded in intercepting many youths mostly young girls that were being planned for trafficking to Libya through the illella border in Sokoto State.

"We had also intercepted many illegal immigrants tying to move in and out of Nigeria through the Kebbi borders", she said.

The NIS state comptroller said what was more worrisome is that most victims of the human traffickers are youths that have no knowledge of what awaits them on their way and in Libya where they are being trafficked to.

Nuhu said the 2015  NIS Act gave her command the mandate to control movement of people in and out of Nigeria in respect of travel documents.
