The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has alleged that the Federal Government is showing preferential treatment toward Christians, citing the ongoing construction of a N25 billion ecumenical chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
In a press statement issued on Friday, May 1, 2026, the group’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, criticized the government for what he described as unequal treatment of religious groups in the country.
MURIC expressed concern over the joint flag-off of the project by the Federal Government and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), questioning why a similar initiative has not been extended to Muslims. The group said the development has stirred reactions among Muslim communities, with growing discontent reflected in mosques and on social media platforms.
The organization also faulted the Federal Government’s approval of N2 billion in relief funds for victims of violence in Plateau State, arguing that victims of similar incidents in states such as Borno, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kwara were not given comparable support.
In addition, MURIC referenced an alleged distribution of N1.2 billion across 19 northern states ahead of the Eid al-Kabir celebrations, describing the amount as disproportionately low when compared to the Plateau relief fund.
Akintola further called on the government to allocate land of equal size and provide funding for the construction of a national mosque, similar to the chapel project. He stressed that fairness and equity must guide government decisions, adding that Muslims deserve equal recognition and treatment.
The Federal Government has yet to officially respond to the allegations.
