Kebbi State joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 2025 World Environment Day with a series of impactful events aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution.

The celebration, held on June 3rd, was organized by the Kebbi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) in collaboration with UNICEF. Although the global date for World Environment Day is June 5th, this year’s celebration in Kebbi was observed two days earlier due to the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Themed “Beat Plastic Pollution”,  featured a street rally, tree planting exercise, and public sensitization campaigns which focused on addressing the growing threat of plastic waste—from production to disposal.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of RUWASSA, Engr. Adamu Shehu, emphasized the importance of this year’s theme. Represented by Hajiya Labiba Abubakar, Head of Planning Department KB RUWASSA, Engr. Adamu highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution poses to the environment, including soil degradation, water source blockage, ecosystem disruption, and contribution to the climate crisis.

He noted that the rally brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministries of Environment, Health, and Information, HYPADEC, NESREA, Academia, Civil Society Organizations, Students, and Persons with Disabilities among others. Their participation underscored the broad-based approach required to combat environmental challenges.

Engr. Adamu expressed optimism that such collaborative efforts would enhance public consciousness around environmental issues and promote sustainable waste management practices. He called on residents of Kebbi State to unite in the fight against plastic pollution and protect the environment for future generations.

He also extended gratitude to the Kebbi State Government for its continued support and to UNICEF for its invaluable partnership.

Highlights of the event include street rally, educational lectures, and planting of trees in strategic locations, and schools across the state.
