FG will support NHRC to protect rights of Nigerians - Fagbemi

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi SAN, on Monday said the Federal Government would support the Nigeria Human Rights Commission (NHRC)  in its efforts to protect rights of Nigerians.

The Attorney General disclosed this while commissioning the NHRC State Office in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi state. He added rhat government will also support the commission in its efforts to own offices nationwide to further entrench its independence snd protection of human rights of Nigerians.

He said the present administration believes in the promotion and protection of the human rights of Nigerians and was determined to provide the enabling environment for the commission to effectively discharge its mandate. "The commissioning of Kebbi State office of the NHRC is a bold statement by federal government towards its support to the commission to protect rights of Nigerians",  he said.
 
The Minister of Justice said the United Nations resolution 48/134 of 20th December 1993 enjoins all.member states to establish independent national human rights institutions in their relative domains for the promotion and protection of human rights.

He said because of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's commitment to ensuring that the mandate of the commission' is achieved, the federal government has not interfered with the  independence of the commission's. "In fact, during the last dissolution of boards of all parastatals  government exempted the governing council of NHRC", the minister said.

In her remarks, the chairperson of the  commission's governing council, Dr Salamatu Suleiman said with the support of Budget Office of the Federation and the National Assembly, the NRHC from 2019 has embarked on the construction and completion of nine new offices.

She said "The  Kebbi office being commissioned today was among those awarded so far.  We appeal to the national assembly and the budget office for more funds to help NHRC realize its mandate  of providing adequate protection to Nigerians when their rights are violated in any state of the federation".
