The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and prosecution of two women over alleged involvement in a same-sex relationship, while a third suspect has been declared wanted after reportedly going into hiding.
In a statement released by the Command, the suspects identified as Bukola Abodunrin and Mobola Sandra were apprehended following an investigation into allegations of lesbianism. The police said they will be charged to court tomorrow, Monday 13th May.
According to the police, a third individual linked to the case, Oluwaseyi Modupe Adebowale, allegedly evaded arrest after the initial detention of the two suspects and has now been declared wanted.
A police source disclosed that during interrogation, Bukola Abodunrin reportedly mentioned the names of other individuals allegedly involved, including Adebowale, leading investigators to widen the scope of their inquiry.
“Bukola confessed to having a relationship with a colleague, Oluwaseyi Modupe Adebowale, with whom she had been romantically involved,” the source said.
Further findings revealed that police investigations extended to Adebowale’s workplace, where her alleged involvement was reviewed. It was gathered that her employer took internal steps in response to the situation, citing possible reputational concerns.
Efforts to arrest Adebowale reportedly led officers to her residence, where they were informed that she had already left the country. Police sources claimed that her husband initially denied officers access before confirming her departure.
Following these developments, Oluwaseyi Modupe Adebowale, a 47 year-old mother of three and wife of Bamidele Adebowale, was officially declared wanted by the police, while the two other suspects remain in custody awaiting prosecution.
Nigeria does not currently provide legal protections for LGBTQ individuals. The country remains socially conservative, with many people refraining from openly expressing their sexual orientation due to fears of stigma, discrimination, and violence.
