A former assistant comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Alhaji Sambo Gwandu has enjoined the supervising ministry, the Ministry of Internal Affairs to review the policy that is causing delay in the issuance of Nigeria passport.
The former ACG of Immigration while delivering his keynote address at an event to commemorate the jubilee anniversary of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Birnin Kebbi said the passport policy should be reviewed to make it easy for Nigerians to acquire it without much difficulties.
He added that despite the achievement the service has recorded through the use of advanced technology since it's creation from the police force in 1958, NIS is currently facing challenges in the issuance of improved Nigeria passport because of policy.
"Before now, the service was proudly issuing Nigeria standard passport within 72 hours at most but now because of the policy it adopted, applicants will have to wait for 3 months or more", he said.
The ex NIS assistant comptroller general said despite the challenges facing the service which started as a unit with only two sections, Visas and business and from a department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs to a full para military service with 8 directorates, 36 state commands and FCT, 38 passport control offices, 4 busy international airports, manning 86 land borders,control ports, over 1,000 illegal routes and with presence in the 774 local governments in the country cannot be described in any other way than successful.
Earlier in her welcome address, the NIS state command comptroller, Rabi Bashir Nuhu said the Kebbi command has recorded remarkable achievement since she took over in February last year. "We had intercepted many illegal immigrants tying to move in and out of Nigeria through the Kebbi borders", she said.
Nuhu said the 2015 NIS Act gave her command the mandate to control movement of people in and out of Nigeria in respect of travel documents.
"I was particularly happy because since the new acting NIS Comptroller General took over she has been working for the success of the service, it's men and officers", she said
