A Civil Society Organisation, Active Support for Rural People Initiative, (ASURPI) has written to chairmen of the 21 local governments in kebbi State asking them to explain how they expended the N34bn they received from the federation account in the last 30 months or face legal action.
The Chief Executive of ASURPI, Malam Ibrahim Ngaski in the letter to the chairmen said the 21 councils from January 2021 to May 2023 had received N1.4bn each amounting to over N34bn from the federal government but have no projects to justify the amount they collected.
"We have the break down of the funds and we have issue them to the Press. Nigeria constitution has given us the mandate to hold them accountable and we are waiting for them to respond. Anything short of that, we will take legal action against them", he said.
He said "As the Nigeria constitution provided that its the function of the local governments to provide social amenities to its people because they are organs of government that are coser to the people.
"But situation in which local governments are currently in Kebbi State despite their mandate by the constitution is worrisome".
He added that the CSOs paid a fact finding mission as the constitution permits to the 21 local government areas of the state to see the level of development but found a pathetic situation despite the huge amount of money allocated to them from the federation account.
"That is why we are calling on local government chairmen to come forward and account for the funds they had received for developmental purposes", Ngaski said.
