A man, Olamide Babayemi was on Tuesday, sentenced to three years imprisonment by the state high court sitting in Kobape, Ogun state for rape, assault, and posting nude pictures and video of the victim on the internet.
It was reported that on the 2nd of January 2020, Babayemi had unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim.
He assaulted, insulted, and defamed the victim by posting her nude pictures and videos on the internet and on WhatsApp
The defendant who was charged with a six-count charge approached the Ministry of Justice to enter a plea bargain agreement.
It was gathered that the defendant’s family and the victim had reconciled and had forgiven the defendant.
The defendant, however, pleaded guilty and entered a plea bargain agreement which was accepted by the court.
Delivering her judgment, Justice, Rotimi Balogun, sentenced the defendant to three years imprisonment.
She said, “In the instant case from the testimony of the only witness who is the victim, what the defendant did to her is deplorable and condemnable.
“However, since she has found it in her heart to forgive him and move on with her life.
“I am of the firm view that leaving the defendant incarcerated for a long time as a young man and first offender would not serve any useful purpose.
“I believe having been in prison for the last two years, he must have learned his lessons.
“He should know by now that if such a thing happens again he would not have a second chance.
“It is for this reason that I agree with the term of imprisonment of three years agreed on in the plea bargain agreement.
“The defendant having pleaded guilty as charged is hereby convicted and sentenced to a term of three years.”
