Lagos State Government Closes Case Against Nollywood Actor, Baba Ijesa

The Lagos State government has closed its case against Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, who is facing trial at an Ikeja Special Offences Court over allegations of defilement. While a lot of people may be confused at what it means for a case to be closed, it simply means that the prosecution has finished giving its evidence.

In Baba Ijesha's case, his lawyer was challenging the admissibility of the evidence that was presented by the police because he sat on the floor. The court has ruled that sitting on the floor does not make the statement inadmissible because he was not tortured, nor was he under duress. The Lagos State Director of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, made this known on Wednesday after the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness by the defence.

The defence counsel, Mr Kayode Olabiran, announced to the court that they intend to file a no-case submission, but Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo has stated that the court will not take the submission before adjourning the case till January. Baba Ijesha is facing a six-count charge bordering on the indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted assault and others.
