I have no boss in Waka music, my talent is a gift from God- Queen Benny Black


Queen Benny Black, said her sojourn in Waka music dated back to late 80s having started in schools and forming a group that was well known in the community then.

Moriliat Adeshola Abeni, a.k.a Queen Benny Black has reiterated that Waka music remains one of the best Yoruba traditional music around.

Speaking during her birthday celebration, she said, despite the springing up of different music in Nigeria today, Waka music still has its place and no music can displace it especially amongst the Yorubas of South-western part of Nigeria.

Having started very young in life she has described music as a passion she inherited from her parents.

The Isiwo, Ogun State, born Waka Act has five albums to her name. In this interview, she said, “Very soon, my band, Queen Benny Black and her Golden Waka Beats is ready to come out with another beautiful Waka songs laced with great messages.

“Today, we have got a lot to talk about, our people need hope, they need to be taken out of depression caused by the situation of things in the country now, and with good music, being a source of joy and hope to so many, I believe we could do better for the society at large.”

Celebrating her birthday recently, she said, “Its a special day and I would like to use the opportunity to appreciate my fans throughout the world.”

On her new year message, she said, “Like I said earlier, we are coming out with something great this year, so, I want people to watch out for the best from Queen Benny Black and her Golden Waka Beats.”

Going down memory lane, she said, no one taught me how to sing waka music, I can say baodly that I never had training from anybody as regards my musical talents. It was a gift from God. Though my parents used to be a great talent too but they were never professional like me. I took a step further than them by making music a profession in the family and it has been wonderful.”
