Representatives from local government Education Authorities; Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic education Board (SUBEB), are well represented at the workshop as issues and discussion were raised for the proper use of technology for the use of monitoring and evaluation of universal basic education projects in Lagos State.
The two day workshop kicked off today at Pearlwort Hotel and Suites, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
In her opening address, Mrs. Olufunso Owasanoye, Executive Director, Human Development Initiatives said, “We are very privileged to have Honourable Board members, Seasoned academics, Directors and Heads of Sections from other different Establishments in-charge of Education, particularly Basic Education in Lagos State. This training for us at Human Development Initiatives, is a dream come true, as far as our passion to ensure that basic education service delivery is fired up. We are greatly honoured to have high caliber of Basic Education handlers in Lagos State in one and the same room.
“Having also seen the realities of the current times, with the unprecedented disruption of the covid-19 pandemic and its consequent effect on our everyday life, it has become imperative to further support the handlers of basic education if we are to sustain the tempo in achieving quality basic education in a post-Covid Nigeria. As an organisation, we have in the past put a lot of efforts into building the capacity of Demand-side actors for the delivery of quality and equitable basic education, however, we have also noted the importance of capacity development for Supply-Side actors as the needs arise, so as to have a holistic approach to basic education development, as eclipsed in the MacArthur Foundation’s On-Nigeria Sandwich strategy. Thus the need for this training which has been rightly captioned: “Implementing Quality Basic Education in a Post Covid-19 Nigeria.
"However, it may seem as though the covid-19 pandemic is posing a huge threat to the actualization of quality basic education in Nigeria. Notwithstanding, in order to ensure that the ultimate goal is achieved, it is important to adapt to the new normal by being innovative and flexible in our approach through the collaborative effort of everyone, including both Supply and Demand side actors. At this juncture, we cannot but commend the Lagos State government in her efforts at ensuring continuous learning for children via various learning platforms during this period of lock down."
A resource person at the workshop, Dr. Fadoke James of National Institute for education and Planning in Ondo state said, “The best way to go about it is for the government to put in place openness and accountability in terms of letting the public know the kind of project it wants to do.
“At
this juncture, I would like to appreciate Lagos State government for making it
public the action plan for 2018 intervention project, and that is the tool we
are using to train at this workshop today.
“Government should facilitate partnership with the local level, the education secretary, the head of sections, the communities, they all should be aware of whichever project is going on, and part of what we are discussing at this training is about leveraging on the use of partnership and the use of different technology to do a remote monitoring. Head of sections, community beneficiary can be supported with different Apps that can be used to track projects without actually going there physically.
Fadoke said, the use of KoBo tool box, telegrams, limeSurvey, open data kit, trackers and other Apps could be of great use for proper monitoring without physical appearance.
"Human Development Initiatives (HDI) is a not-for-profit, Non-Governmental Organization, with the goal to strengthen vulnerable humans in the society. HDI particularly envisions a society of empowered humans devoid of social and economic vulnerabilities. Having realized that one of the greatest tools to tackle the problem of inequality in our society is education, of which Basic education remains the indispensable foundation, we have decided with the support of our partner the MacArthur Foundation, to strengthen the delivery of quality basic education while ensuring that education funds count, not just in Lagos, but all over Nigeria.” Owasanoye added in her words.
