SENATOR BUKOLA SARAKI CONDEMNS OMOZUWA'S RAPE AND MURDER INCIDENT

Dr Bukola Saraki has joined other prominent Nigerians to condemn the rape and murder incident that happened to an undergraduate, Uwa Omozuwa, 22-year-old in Benin city, Edo state.

In his post on one of his social media handles, the former Senate President said, “The reports of the rape and murder of a 22-year-old undergraduate of the University of Benin, Uwa Omozuwa, in a church in Benin City are extremely shocking. Such savagery has no place in Nigerian society...

He continued, “As a people, we have to work to create a safe space for our girls and women – in our homes, at work and in our places of worship- free from any and all sorts of sexual violation. And I say this is not just because I'm girldad, but because it is the right thing to do."

In his conclusion, the Senator said I strongly appeal to our law enforcement agencies to leave no stone uncovered in finding the perpetrators of this heinous act and bringing them to justice.

I pray that the Almighty comforts the Omozuwa family and strengthens them at this very difficult time.” He posited.  

Miss Vera Omozuwa, 100-level Microbiology student Omozuwa died after doctors battled for three days to save her after she was gang-raped by four unknown men and beaten to a pulp with a fire extinguisher.

Uwa Omozuwa was raped and killed right inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) parish on May 27, 2020, during her study hours. According to an RCCG statement signed by spokesperson Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi, “in view of the lockdown order by government, our churches had been closed to worship and other fellowships.

“However, on Wednesday, 27th May 2020, Miss Uwa Omozuwa had collected the keys to the church hall of her parish as she had been doing since the lockdown began, for use for her private educational studies.

“On the said date, when the night guard at the church resumed duties a little after 7pm, he found the lady on the floor in the church half-naked and in the pool of her own blood.

“The parents and other people were alerted and she was taken to a nearby hospital from where she was transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where efforts were made to save her life.

“Unfortunately, she gave up the ghost on Saturday night.”
