In a bid to further minimize
corruption in education sector and channel positive change in the
area of Implementation of UBE projects, Human
Development Initiatives (HDI), a non-governmental organization yesterday organized a
round table dialogue with the media, CSO
and other concerned bodies in the society.
The forum that came up at the Onike, Lagos office of the organization was well attended by Civil Society
Organization (CSO); representatives from different media organizations and
other groups.
BELOW IS THE FULL ADDRESS BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR; DR. MRS, OLUFUNSO OWASANOYE.
I warmly welcome every one of you to media and
CSO round table dialogue on Monitoring of the Utilization of UBE Funds
Project. This is a crucial time where most of our children are out of school
because of non-conducive learning environment. All hands must be on deck to
ensure our children receive quality, free and inclusive basic education through
effective service delivery.
HDI is a Not for Profit and Non Governmental
Organization with the vision to strengthen the vulnerable humans especially the
children in society through development programs and initiatives.
It is a wonder that despite the UBE
intervention, many schools are still in dire need of education infrastructures.
Some have dilapidated structures while others have no basic education
infrastructures all together.
Today’s dialogue is mainly on your role as key
partners to achieve the objective of ensuring judicious utilization of the
funds meant for the UBE projects in Government Primary and Junior Secondary
schools in Lagos State. This project involves both LGA and schools, given the fact
that funds utilization is spread round LGAs across the state. Monitoring of
funds disbursement and utilization is based on Lagos SUBEB Action Plan.
HDI is calling on every one of you to advocate
for positive change in the area of Implementation of the UBE projects.
HDI supports and strengthens existing measures
by local government and state on school services and project monitoring. HDI is
also a strong advocate of Transparency, Accountability and Good Governance in
Education all over Nigeria. (TAGG).
As education stakeholders, HDI will appreciate
your continuous collaboration as independent
monitors and reporters.
Our coming together today is to develop
strategies for more effective tracking of education projects in the bid to
further minimize corruption in education sector.
Achieving quality basic education is responsibility
of all of us, jointly with your involvement and commitment we can make it work
I wish you a fruitful meeting.
Thank you all.
Olufunso Owasanoye.
Executive Director, HDI
